Create Layouts with Sections and Paragraphs

Sections and Paragraphs give you flexibility in how to lay out content. This guide talks about adding Paragraphs to a Section. All content types have structured fields. Sections and Paragraphs are an optional way to allow you to highlight and feature important content and to take advantage of Stanford Sites options for dynamic content, like Lists, Filtered Lists, Image Galleries, and more. This guide gets you started with the basics.

Not all content types allow the addition of Sections and Paragraphs. This guide is relevant to the following content types:

Add a Section

Before you can add a Paragraph, you need to add a Section. Sections allow you to control the arrangement and and width of Paragraphs contained in the section. Sections have options for controlling background color, borders, and spacing.

Click on Add section to begin.

You will be given an option to select a layout. You can choose a single column, two columns, or three columns. If you select a two column layout, you can choose between a 50/50 layout, or choose to have a larger left or larger right column.

Once you have a section, you can click on the + (plus) symbol to start adding content.

Add a Paragraph to a Section

Click on the plus (+) icon to add a new Paragraph. The options available to you will depend on the width of the Section column and the content type. All Paragraphs are available in one column layouts on Basic Page.

Once you have chosen a paragraph type, you will be prompted with the editing area for that paragraph type. The example below shows what this would look like if you had selected the Text Area paragraph.

Edit the paragraph. Once you are done, you can click Save. Once you save your paragraph, you will be able to see a preview of your content.

Finally, Save your page.

Important page editing notes

  • Your editing preview may not completely match the final display. For best results, save your page to see your final edits.
  • Deleted Sections and Paragraphs cannot be restored.
  • You must save your page. If you hit the back button while editing or navigate away from the edit page while editing, your changes will not be saved. You will see a dialog box that warns you that you are leaving the page.
