Add Metadata to a Basic Page
The Page Metadata feature on Basic Page allows you to control what image and text is featured in Lists and Teasers, social sharing applications, on-site search, and external search. Page Metadata does not appear on the page itself.
Other content types (Events, News, etc) rely on structured data for a featured image and teaser text. Basic Pages, by constrast, are very flexible and therefore do not have a predictable set of fields.
Add a Page Image and add a Page Description
The Page Image and Page Description will display in List paragraphs along with the Page Title. As an added bonus, when users share your Page on social media the Page Image and Description will appear along with the Page Title.
- Edit a Basic Page
- Scroll down to Page Metadata
- Under Page Image, click the Add Media button and select an existing image or upload a new image
- In the Page Description field, enter a brief description of the page (up to 255 characters)
Click Save.
Where Page Image and Page Description are used
On your site, the image and description will be used in the following places:
- Lists Paragraph - Basic Page Default List and Card Grid
- Teaser Paragraph when selecting a Basic Page
- On-site search results
Your page metadata may also show up in external services, including:
- Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and other search results
- When sharing links in Slack
- When sharing links on social platforms like Bluesky, LinkedIn, and others
Set a Basic Page Type
Setting a Basic Page Type allows you to create lists of pages based on categories. For example, you could create a Basic Page Type called “Research Project,” then add a list of pages using that identifier to any page.
When adding categories to your Basic Page Type vocabulary, you should choose terms that represent broad categories, rather than narrow descriptions. For example, “Research Projects” would be a good broad category, but “Alzheimer Research” may be too narrow.
- Add a new term to your site’s Basic Page Types vocabulary. See Adding new taxonomy terms
- Edit your Basic Page
- Scroll down to the Page Metadata
- Click on the Basic Page Type drop-down menu and select a term
- You may add additional terms
Click Save.
