User Accounts and Roles
Site managers have the ability to manage the user accounts on their site by adding and updating user roles and by canceling user accounts.
User roles and permissions
Anyone who visits your website is considered a user. For public websites, there are two types of users:
- Anonymous Users - Users who are not logged in. In this user guide, we call these users Site Visitors.
- Authenticated Users - Users who are logged in. These users may or may not have a role that allows them to edit the site.
Intranets only have Authenticated Users.
Site Managers can give anyone with a SUNet ID a User Role.. A user role determines what privileges that user has, as defined in User Permissions.
There are four main types of User Roles on Stanford Sites. Users with more than one role will get the privileges of the highest level role.
- Site Reviewer. Users with this role can review unpublished pages, but have no other privileges.
- Contributor. Users with this role have access to edit most site content. This is a useful role for infrequent editors.
- Site Editor. Users with this role have broader access to make page edits, publish content, edit categories, and more.
- Site Manager. Users with this role have the broadest access, including all site configuration and access to update site ownership information.
This table represent the privileges assigned to each role.

Request editing access
To request access to edit a site, you can talk to the site owner. You can also file a ticket in ServiceNow. Stanford Web Service always checks with the site owner before granting access.
Additional roles
Stanford Sites also supports two additional roles which may be granted in consultation with Stanford Web Services. Each of these roles requires relevant technical knowledge and requires the user to assume some additional responsibility.
- Layout Builder User. This role grants access to Layout Builder, an additional tool for adjusting some page configurations on a per-page basis. Users granted this role should have previous familiarity with Layout Builder and an understanding that it is not a supported tool.
- Site Embedder. This role grants access to a wider range of embedding options. Users granted this role must have the knowledge outlined in our Embeddable Media Policy Users granted this role assume responsibility for the security of the embeddables they add to their media library.
