Add a Page to the Menu
This guide covers adding a page to the site's menu, also called the "main navigation." This is an option for Basic Page, Event Series, Person, and Policy content types.
For ways to add external links, duplicate entries into your navigation, or to see your entire menu tree, see our guide to Main Navigation.
Add a page to the menu
- Go to the page you would like to add to your navigation.
- Click Edit.
- Locate the tab called Menu Settings.
- Check the checkbox next to Provide a menu link.
The Menu link title auto-populates to the current Page Title. If you would prefer to have a shorter title for the menu item, you can update the name within the text box.
- If you want the item to appear along the top of your site header, make sure the Parent item dropdown is set to <Main Navigation>. If not, follow the steps outlined below.
- You can drag the menu item into your preferred order by using the drag icon
- Once you are happy with the link placement in the menu hierarchy, save the page.
Edit an existing menu item
Sometimes you need to update the menu item because the page title has changed or you wish to shorten it. This can be done on the page itself, using the same settings used in creating the menu item.
- Go to the page that needs to be adjusted in the menu.
- Click Edit.
- Locate the tab called Menu Settings near the bottom of the page.
- Make adjustments to the name and/or location of the menu item
- Click Save.
Add a page under an existing menu item
If you wish to have your page appear in a sidebar or drop-down menu, and not the main navigation, follow these steps.
- Follow steps 1-5 listed above.
- From the Parent item dropdown, select the page under which your new page should be nested.
- Drag the menu item to your preferred placement by using the move tool.
- Once you are happy with the link placement in the menu hierarchy, save the page.
Troubleshooting
I changed the title, but the old title still appears in the Main Navigation. What should I do?
When editing the page, scroll to the bottom and ensure the "Provide a menu link" box is checked. Then, update the "Menu link title" field to reflect the new title in the Main Navigation.
I see the page in the menu, but I don't see anything in Menu Settings on the actual page. What gives?
The page was added to the menu as a custom menu link. We do not recommend this method for pages on the site. You can learn more about how to remove the custom menu item on our guide to Main Navigation.
